What is the Fair App?
While there are numerous different vehicle solutions when getting a car for rideshare, Fair has a different approach. It’s not exactly a rental nor is it a lease. It’s something in between. Fair partners with dealerships across the country to give you access to a handful of different vehicles to drive with Uber. It charges a very competitive weekly payment along with a start payment of $500. This start payment is a one-time up-front fee in addition to your vehicle’s weekly payment. Their new Uber Program for California drivers doesn’t involve a start payment but rather a refundable deposit. More is covered regarding the new program below.
What kind of vehicles will I be able to choose from?
Fair has done a great job of providing a huge amount of inventory for drivers to pick from. You will get to choose from a plethora of pre-owned vehicle within the last 7 years, though most of the vehicles on their platform are within the last 3 years. Some are also certified pre-owned in great overall condition. Their inventory includes subcompact cars like the Toyota Corolla, Nissan Versa, Chevrolet Spark, Mitsubishi Mirage, all the way to full-size sedans such as the Toyota Camry, and the Honda Accord. You can even get luxury vehicle such as a Lexus, Mercedes, Audi, or BMW if it’s available in your market.
Due to popular demand, inventory can change so make sure to check often to get your desired car.
- Must be age 21 or older

How does it work?
Fair has partnered with Uber to offer a simple, streamlined process of getting into a vehicle without having to deal with lots of paperwork, or shady salespeople at dealerships. In the Fair app, you are able to view inventory of available vehicles, sign a contract, and make a payment all without ever having to step into a dealership. Furthermore, the Fair app allows you to browse your ideal vehicle by price, make, model year, and even location. This flexibility makes it very intuitive and easy to use.
Where is Fair Available?
Fair has a national footprint, offering its service in over 24 cities. Here are some of the markets in which they operate:
- New York
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco Bay Area
- San Diego
How much do Fair cars cost?
This will vary from market to market but the lowest price I’ve seen has been $90 a week. This is before taxes and insurance. From their current inventory, vehicles approved for the Uber Platform range from $90 to $200 per week before taxes and insurance. For example, a 2017 Honda Accent SE is listed for $90 a week (before taxes and insurance), while a 2014 Mercedes C300 is listed for $200 a week. This allows Uber drivers to not only choose cars to drive Uber X (Uber’s low-cost option), but also Uber’s more premium ride options such as Uber Select, or in some cases Uber XL and Uber Black (if available in your market). Insurance and an optional wear and tear coverage can also be included as additional add-ons. While the cost may vary, it’s roughly $32-$35 a week for insurance and $7-$8 a week for the excess wear and tear coverage.
In markets other than California, there’s a start payment of $500. This payment is a one-time fee that every driver has to pay before getting into a car.
Fair has a new program for Uber drivers in California. So, if you live and drive in California then you have the option of getting a car for Uber for $185 a week (plus tax) with a $185 refundable deposit. There is no start payment.
